Magic is the study of the fundamental forces that bind the Wyrld together, and cause nature to behave in the way it does. Even the most mundane of persons wield a form of magic when they hoe the fields or utilize a bow to propel an arrow far faster than they could by hand. What separates those called mages from the rest of the populace is that they have learned to control these forces with the power of their mind. By forcing the Wyrld to mold itself to their Will they separate themselves from the normal man in a way as fundamental as the difference between man and beast. There are many kinds of magi, as well as many different levels of mastery. A brief explanation is presented here, in the hopes that one who has not studied magic themself might better understand what it entails. In addition to magi there are those creatures that can use magic due to some innate ability, rather than advanced study and practice. Although magi often scoff at these creatures and their salient powers, they are in many ways the superior of magic learned through the disciplines, if not quite as malleable. The genie of the Encroaching Desert are a prime example of this sort of magic, as are the few priests in the Wyrld whose faith is so great that it is rewarded by their deity with special powers and abilities. Of this class, the fabled Paladins are the most famous and shining example. Wyrldscape is a free form play-by-post role playing game created for the enjoyment of interaction and creative writing.
