Levels of Proficiency

Initiate An initiate has just begun to study magic, having little but his dedication to separate him from the masses.
Novice Novices have begun to study magic in earnest, though they still can do and understand very little
Magician As a magician one has finally attained a level where only the most skilled practitioners can duplicate what the mage can now do with his magic.
Thaumaturge A thaumaturge is "one who can perform miracles." It is at this level of study that a mage can perform feats that cannot be performed without the use of magic, no matter how hard one might try.
Apprentice Mage Finally a true mage, the apprentice is often approached by guilds or other organizations for membership and possible patronage.
Mage (journeyman) A true mage and practitioner of his art.
Master Mage The rare individuals who become Master Magi are those who set the tone for their sphere and the organizations that surround it. Master Magi are surprisingly able to cope with nearly any situation, and possess profound intellects.
Archmage An Archmage is a being whose dedication and mastery has reached a level that pushes the boundaries of what has gone before. Their spellcraft and research add new levels and abilities to the sphere, and their prestige spreads across the land.
Hierophant Hierophants go beyond even Archmages. These legendary magi push not only the bounds of magic, but of reality itself. Their prowess is the stuff of myth and legend for centuries to come.
