Pheltul is a gentleman god who never takes anything by force. He is a master bargainer and the penultimate schemer who's only weakness is his love of gambling. "Making a deal with Pheltul" is a common phrase meaning that one is doing something foolish which will likely have dire consequences. Because the main motivations of Pheltul are not known there is little about him that most people can say other than this, he is the Holder of Dead Souls. Pheltul regards the souls of all men as his, and he is working slowly but surely to collect them all with the savvy and patience of confident god. Seat of the Faith Worship of Pheltul is a rare and strange thing. Occasionally some will make a sacrifice or request of him to delay the taking of a loved one, but Pheltul never hears such requests unless something is offered in return. Recently a small temple to Pheltul was established in the city of Menion, and its priests journey up to Vaelsh frequently to make rounds among the people. The priests claim to work to supplicate their god, having studied his motives and the art of "collective bargaining" for years to better help those under the thumb of the Gentleman God. Even so, many are suspicious of the well dressed priests. Although small the temple in Menion is rather wealthy and its priests always seem well dressed and well fed, something which cannot be said for all of the temples in that city. Because this temple is relatively new, little can be said about their plans for the future, including any intent to expand. Tenets, Beliefs, and Dogma Those who worship Pheltul do it for one reason, to avert the god's eye or to bargain with him for a life. The god is believed to come to the Wyrld in the form of a raven to search for opportunities in disguise. As such, the Vaelsh have a instinctual distrust of the large black birds, particularly if one of the birds seems too interested in events around it. Relations to Other Faiths The priests of Pheltul receive a cool reception at best wherever they go. To the people who need their services they are a last resort, and to all others they are unwelcome, often viewed as spies for their god. Surprisingly, the church of Phessus in Menion is on good terms with the temple of Pheltul, mainly because both are at odds with the followers of Yourshi. Factions and Heresies The new temple of Pheltul and its priests are considered a heresy by many who believe this god should only be invoked under dire need, and that no one should dedicate their life to him, in any manner. There are no other priests or temples to this god, for the faith is still far to small and localized.
